Vacation in Colorado
We recently vacationed to Colorado for Aunt Jeanette and Uncle Patrick's wedding. We stayed in the town of Breckenridge in a huge lodge with friends and family for two days...pretty darn awesome. The view was absolutely breathtaking, complete serenity and nothing but fields of nature. It was so great to be with family and friends and the wedding turned out absolutely beautiful. They couldn't have picked a more beautiful location.
After the wedding, we drove into Denver, where we spent the next few days. We ventured over to the Denver zoo, the Children's museum (great great place for the kids), and the Butterfly Pavilion, where Avery held her first taranchula, Rosie. We ate at lots of great restaurants and ate lots and lots of ice cream. One of my favorite places was a little ice cream shop right downtown Denver. It's called small man ice cream and they have the best ice cream in town. Their banana honey ice cream is insane.
I have to say that we felt our trip went by too quickly and we were a bit sad to have to go, but we had an awesome time and got some great pictures. I'm starting to get ideas for our next vacation. Oh, and Congrats to Patrick and Jeanette also, thanks for making our vacation so special.

Mad Hatter Tea Party
Today was Avery's last day of dance and they invited all of the girls to a Mad Hatter Tea Party bash to celebrate. They all got dressed up in their fancy, party dresses and hats for tea and cookies. All the little girls looked so proper and grown up, it was very cute.
Avery had so much fun in this class and loved everything about it. Her teacher was really great, which really helped her break out of her shell. I'm so glad she was able to be a part of it. Next year she will be going to school full time, so it may be a little tough to find a class that fits her schedule, but I can't wait to get her back in.

Minnie caught in the Dryer
So I was doing some laundry this morning and I had left for just a second to put my clothes away. When I came back, this I what I found sitting in the dryer staring at me. This cute little furball decided to climb in the dryer without me noticing. She's pretty sneaky!

Avery's first broken arm
As some of you may already know, Avery recently fell on the playground while playing at the park. She was hanging from the monkey bars and was holding on with dear life. Unfortunately she couldn't hold on any longer and I was about 2 seconds too late to catch her. She fell to the ground and landed on her arm. Poor thing was in pretty bad pain for the next couple of days.
A few days went by and we had noticed she was still favoring her left hand and not using her right hand at all. It was still pretty swollen too. We decided to take her to urgent care where they did an x ray and told us she had a buckle fracture. Luckily the bone wasn't completely broken, but it still need a cast and they referred us to an orthopedic surgeon.
I was able to get her in two days later and they did another x ray, which confirmed it was definately a fracture. The doctor was pretty cool and he was really great with her. He let Avery pick out the color of cast she wanted. I was amazed that she didn't choose pink and went with the purps (purple) cast instead! She has to wear it for the next few weeks, and should heal nicely. The hard part will be keeping it clean, dry, and sand free!
While having breakfast this morning, Avery says to me, "Next time I can get a pink cast!"

A Beautiful story of survival, strength, faith, and courage
Hello fellow bloggers, so I recently had the privilege of getting an email from someone who had a question about my blog, someone I had never known before. While a little bit skeptical at first, I emailed her back and found out that she was not only a mother to a 6 1/2 quirky little girl, as she put its, but a courageous mother, wife, and survivor of mesothelioma cancer, wanting to share her inspirational story with others. As a motivational speaker and inspiration to others, she felt that sharing her story on my blog would be an excellent place to let people read about her own personal journey. Of course, after reading her story and visiting her blog, I told her I'd be honored. Her story had really touched me, and having a friend who was diagnosed with cancer many years back, it had hit close to home. After reading Heather's story, I realize how thankful I am to be a mother to two, amazing little children, and to be able to be with them and watch them grow each and every day. I am truly thankful for this. :)
Here is Heather's story of survival, strength, faith, and courage. Thanks for taking the time to read this and please visit her personal blog at www.mesothelioma.com/blog/authors/heather/bio.htm
Thank you Heather for allowing me to post your story here and taking the time to share your amazing story with others!
Living Life to the Fullest Despite Cancer
There is a line in the film "Auntie Mame" that strikes me as a wonderful way to see things. "Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death. . ." On November 21, 2005, this quote became my mantra. I learned that life is a banquet and it can be short, so I have to eat while I can. That day, I was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Lung cancer. My only child was a mere three months old. I was facing life and death as a young mother.
Of course, this disease was like facing down a dark nightmare. It was also a way to learn something about myself. I am not a poor sucker. Dr. David Sugarbaker at Boston's Brigham and Women's helped me realize that. Yes, my chances were slim--Something like 2% chance of seeing my child grow past five years. Two-percent is still some percent and I knew it. It became my goal to be included among those lucky banquet-eating few. My daughter could not grow up without a mom. I could not give up.
The first year after being diagnosed with this deadly disease was very difficult. Obviously, it was not impossible to beat, but that does not make it easy. I had my entire left lung removed. I was in Boston, hanging on to life by a thread while my daughter was with my parents nearly 2,000 miles away.
After surgery, it was never-ending chemotherapy and radiation. I managed to be a mom while being as sick as I had ever been in my life. I received help from loved ones that gave me strength, and my daughter attention that we needed. By the time my daughter had her first birthday, it was very close to a year since my diagnosis. I was close to the end of my mesothelioma treatment and hopeful that my cancer would stay gone.
Since my battle with cancer, I have come to several realizations. Nothing in life is replaceable. Everything, every moment, every loved one, should be treasured. I have learned to indulge in the buffet and never allow myself to starve. Every little thing means so much more to me. Beauty is more beautiful and it comes in the form of my growing daughter. I have learned that life is meant to be lived, not survived.
Getting sick had a strange side effect that one might not expect from cancer. It allowed me to meet some of the strongest and bravest people I have ever known. These people will now forever be a part of me. These people inspired me to work at raising awareness for mesothelioma. I live life to the fullest while trying to help pave the way for others to do the same because of these brave folk.

All Pixared Out
Callum is all decked out in his new Cars 2 tennies and his Buzz Lightyear jammies. He actually dressed himself and it was too cute to not get a picture of. He is always making us smile! :)
Callum turned 3
My little guy just turned 3! He celebrated his special day at his favorite place in the world, well, his other favorite place besides Toys 'R Us.....Disneyland, of course! He always has a blast when he goes to Disneyland. His favorite ride is "It's a small world" and "Winnie the Pooh". We cannot go to Disneyland without going on both of those rides, everytime. :)
Now that Callum has turned 3, there are lots of new and funny quirks he has picked up along the way. His latest one is telling people his name is Buzz Lightyear (from Toy Story). Also, he always has to carry a small figurine toy with him when we leave the house, and at dinner time he likes to put his toys on the table so they can "watch him eat." When we go to the store, it is very important that he always help me put the groceries up on the counter. He is constantly doing the funniest little things and keeps me smiling throughout my day.
Some of Callum's favorite things are Buzz Lightyear, his Woody doll, cars, going to Target, arts and crafts, coloring, puzzles, his VReader, going to the park, Buzz Lightyear, learning his ABC's, riding his bike, playing soccer with Daddy, Buzz Lightyear, Disneyland, Mickey Mouse clubhouse, going out to eat, Buzz Lightyear, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, playing make believe with his sister, Toys 'R Us, Disney movies, ice cream, and Buzz Lightyear.
Here is the little guy enjoying his birthday cake. We made him a yummy Toy Story cake!

Avery's Valentine's Day Party
Avery's class had a special party to celebrate Valentine's Day today. It was an enjoyable moment filled with "lots" of cupcakes, cookies, and candy for these preschoolers. They each had their own special shoe box filled with Valentine cards from their friends. It brought back memories of when I was a kid and I remember doing the same thing. The best part is bringing home your box and getting to look through all the Valentines at the end of the day. Awww, the good old days. ;) Happy V- Day!

The newest addition to our family
Meet Minnie, the newest addition to our family. We adopted Minnie from the Escondido animal shelter yesterday and we've been having so much fun with this lovable little girl. She is a 3 yr old kitty and she is very sweet and affectionate. She's been roaming around exploring the house the last couple of days and is becoming very acqainted with everything, including us. She seems to have warmed up to the kids very nicely and they absolutely adore her. She seems to have already found a favorite spot, inside of Avery's closet. We are very excited to have found our little Minnie.

Disneyland Pics
Avery and Callum got to enjoy a fun afternoon at the wonderful magic kingdom this past week. What better way to start off the new year right, then at their favorite place ever......Disneyland! :)
Here is Avery and Mickey Mouse. We tried to get Cal in the picture too, but he was a little hesistant of Mickey that day. :)
Avery stood with Duffy bear for almost 5 minutes just giving him hugs. We weren't sure she'd ever leave him....it was very sweet!
Toy Story....one of their personal favorites!
